Maintenance of Marine Weathertight Doors

2026-03-21

The core maintenance of marine watertight doors mainly focuses on four aspects: cleaning and anti-corrosion, sealing guarantee, lubrication of moving parts, and functional testing. By following a regular schedule, the reliable performance can be maintained.

1. Daily / Pre-voyage Maintenance

  • Clean the door body, frame and sealing surface with fresh water to remove salt deposits, dust and marine residues. Do not use strong acid, alkali or ammonia-containing cleaners.
  • Visually inspect for deformation, corrosion or cracked welds on the door and frame.
  • Check the rubber seal for aging, cracking, damage or misalignment.
  • Ensure hinges, handles, locking mechanisms operate smoothly without jamming.
  • Confirm drain holes and channels are clear and unobstructed.
  • Test opening and closing manually 2–3 times to ensure tight closing and secure locking.

2. Periodic Maintenance (Weekly / Monthly)

  • Sealing System
    • Clean the rubber seal and apply marine-grade silicone grease or rubber protectant to maintain elasticity.
    • Check the fitting clearance between door and frame; adjust hinges or locking bolts if necessary.
    • Replace the entire seal every 3–6 months or when deterioration is found (splicing is not permitted).

  • Moving Parts
    • Clean hinges, lock shafts, rollers and driving mechanisms, then apply marine anti-corrosion grease every 1–3 months.
    • Check and retighten all fasteners to ensure proper torque.

  • Corrosion Protection & Coating
    • Repair chipped or blistered paint by sanding, derusting and recoating with anti-corrosive paint.
    • Apply anti-rust grease to exposed metal surfaces.

3. Special Inspections (Quarterly / Half-yearly / Annual)

  • Conduct a water spray test with a low-pressure water gun along the door seam to check for leaks.
  • Inspect the door panel and frame for permanent deformation; measure plate thickness if required.
  • Test self-closing devices, alarms and emergency opening functions to ensure compliance with SOLAS requirements.

4. Key Notes

  • Keep complete maintenance records for PSC inspections and traceability.
  • Use only original or class-approved spare parts (seals, locks, grease).
  • Increase inspection and maintenance frequency after heavy weather or during dry-docking.
